The controls

If you have never driven before, the 'controls lesson' is your introduction to the car and all the bits that you will operate as a driver.

If you have driven before, your instructor will spend a little time familiarising you with any differences between your tuition vehicle and any other vehicle which you may have driven.

The lesson will normally start with some information about driver safety and responsibilities, including the basic drill that you will carry out every time you get into the car.

You will also learn about the main controls that are used to drive the car and any other controls that are necessary for your lesson (for example, if your first lesson is at night you will need to know how to switch the lights on).

Depending on the length of your first lesson, you should ideally be learning how to start the engine, move off and stop safely. If you don't cover these items, consider your choice of instructor ...

Controls lesson

When you have completed your Cockpit Drill your instructor will explain the function and use of the mail controls. Complete the quiz when you have read the pages.

Your instructor won't cover all the switches, dials and instruments during your first lesson - they will be covered over the next few lessons. They're included in this section for you to learn as much as possible for yourself.
